“I can’t eat for 30 hours? I can’t do it.”
Fasting for thirty hours may sound like a daunting task, but it is a mission larger than any one of us. 30 Hour Fast is a night of purpose, of community, and of course, of fun!
Today—
• 821 million are chronically undernourished; of these 821 million, 526 million live in Asia
• 98% of world hunger exists in underdeveloped countries
• 1 in every 15 children in developing countries die before the age of 5 (due to hunger); this translates to 3 million unnecessary deaths

This year’s NHS-hosted 30 Hour Fast, a spinoff of 30 Hour Famine, has set its mission to alleviate hunger-related issues by donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the Shanghai Food Bank. Based in China, the Green Food Bank works to reduce environmental problems caused by food waste and provide food supplements for low-income and vulnerable families in the community. Since its founding, it has reached more than 160,000 people from Shanghai, Chengdu to Xinjiang by providing daily meals to these communities.
On Friday, all 30 Hour Fast participants will be receiving a special pin for juice. In the afternoon, NHS has organized a series of team activities, collectively called the Hunger Games, from escape rooms to supermarket sweep, and more! At night, we will exercise our brains and brawn with trivia, a fashion show (themed around superheroes), and battleship! And at midnight, we will break fast together.
By donating a minimum of 500 RMB, we will be able to send meals to those in perpetual starvation. In fact, last year, we collectively raised around 16,000USD (95,000RMB) through 30 Hour Fast! Come and collect sponsor forms, organize bake sales, ask your friends and family to support your fasting! Keep in mind that every coin will make a difference and you are one step closer to creating a hunger-free world.
Interested? There is still time to join! Turn in your permission slips by Wednesday, November 7th to Ms Wolf or Ms. Murphy, or sign up online at https://goo.gl/forms/hlEWjA0bQXzMK1Nt2.
While the notion of fasting for 30 hours may seem off-putting, but let’s be honest, we have been asking the wrong question. Rather than ask whether “to starve or not to starve,” we should instead ask ourselves whether “to help or not to help” kids, like us, who are still hungry.
I say: “you can do it!”
