Boys
This past weekend, SAS Puxi’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team won all three of their games, each with a score margin of at least twenty points. The boys beat SAS Pudong 53-31, Shanghai High School International Division by 62-40, and Concordia International School with a final score of 60-27. SAS Puxi Boys ended the tournament last weekend with 9 points, obtaining their well-earned first place.
“Considering how early it is in the season, we played very well as a team,” said Robert Tang, one of the team’s captains, “We have a very young team this year, and everyone was very excited for the first tournament this season.” He says that some things they did well this weekend include “pushing the ball” and “getting lots of points in transition”. They also played “fairly strong defense”, as seen from how they held teams to “pretty low points”. However, the team wasn’t perfect. Rob sees to make many improvements with the team in the upcoming future, including “communication on the court in cleaning up offense” as well as “pressing in defense”. “We’re still adjusting to each other’s play styles,” he says, “ but I’m excited for when we start clicking.”
Coach Preston also commented on their performance this weekend, saying that the strengths from this weekend was “toughness”. “Our players were able to trust each other on the defensive side of the floor,” he said, “and play solid team defense.” In the future, he hopes that the team can be more patient with their offense. “These players have bought in so it's only a matter of time before it all clicks,” he says.
The team’s goal for its future remains simple: “to be better than the last day”. “As a team,” he says, “we have high expectations but we take it day by day; it starts with never wasting a practice or a learning opportunity.” Despite such a good start to the season, it is clear that the team is not willing to back down. With many practices and opportunities ahead, we can confidently expect the team to only get better throughout the season.

Girls
This weekend, the SAS girl's basketball team kicked off their season with Shanghai Cup, a tournament consisting of schools Shanghai High School International Division (SHSID), Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS), Shanghai American School Pudong (SASPD), and Shanghai American School Puxi (SASPX). The girls were victorious over SHSID and CISS, winning them 47-23 and 50-29, respectively. However, they lost to SASPD 38-54, putting them in second overall place in the tournament. As the first tournament of the season, Shanghai Cup gave the team valuable opportunity to test the waters and discover their strengths and weaknesses.
According to Coach Michael Branch, the tournament was a good place to "work on our new offense; it also allowed our six new varsity players the opportunity to gain critical game time experience," adding that through the game experience, they discovered their strengths, including a effective press and an explosive offense consisting of "the driving ability of Rylie Evans, the outside shooting of Joyce Kao, and the all around ability of Julia Markmann." On the defensive side, strengths include "our man-to-man defensive pressure, led by Sofie Fella, makes it very difficult for other teams to score on us."
Moreover, the tournament also gave the team critical insight on improvements for the future. Coach Branch states that after this tournament, "we will work hard to make better decisions on the floor; our passing needs to improve; and our free throw shooting." He also added that the lose to Pudong, while disappointing, "will be our motivation moving forward. We look forward to the battle we will have with them in APAC." As such, we can be assured that the Puxi girls basketball team will be working hard to improve, and will surely bring an exciting performance the next time games roll around.
