“This year’s winter formal was planned so it would be better than last year’s on every level”, said the Student Council, which is what they say every year but this year they might actually be right.
For one, it will be hosted in the highest banquet hall in the world—the 93rd floor of the World Financial Center, which provides a view of both the Bund and Lujiazui.
The food will also top last year’s, as it will be provided by the prestigious Park Hyatt—a luxurious 5-star hotel that has won various awards for providing the best service to its first-class guests.
“The venue is of a different class,” said Senior Council President Kendrick Tan. Tan also assures those who are disappointed in the venue change not to worry: “It will definitely be better than the Mercedes-Benz Arena, by a huge margin. The old venue was appropriate given the price, but we couldn’t turn down the highest banquet hall in the world….”
“It will also be more convenient for everyone,” continued Tan, which is true, as the World Financial Center (100 Century Avenue, Lujiazui, Pudong Xinqu) is located in the city center near popular diners and malls that Winter Formal attendees can relax with friends at before the event.
The theme of the dance, Hollywood, allows attendees to dress according to their favorite movie blockbusters. It also gave STUCO the opportunity to adopt a bolstered advertising plan, in which posters parody popular movies or TV shows.
One entry ticket costs 300RMB and 350RMB at the door. Seniors that buy winter formal tickets also get free tickets to Prom.
The Senior Council also continued to host the annual competition in which students can film their proposals to win 600RMB. This year’s winners were seniors Lauren Chang and Gabriel Lee.
The dance isn’t considered to be as formal as Prom, but more so than MORP. Regardless, everyone is expected to dress up for the event.
“The last Winter Formal allowed me to relieve a lot of stress,” said Kelly Chan. Sarah Yang also believes that the dance is a worthwhile experience. “Although it is expensive, the dance is really a great opportunity to dress up and socialize. When I went as a freshman, it was even more memorable, as it was the first formal event of high school.”
From what the Senior Council has told us, we should have high expectations for this year’s Winter Formal. The superb venue, view, and food the attendees will receive make the dance seem much more than two photo booths that cost 300RMB.
