Winter Formal. What usually comes to mind when you think of this extravagant yet severely underrated event? Probably awkward shuffling, loitering around by the refreshments, questionable fashion choices, and that 2013 Taylor Swift song playing on loop. Stanley Park (‘19), senior student council president, strongly emphasized that Winter Formal 2019 will be “incomparable” to all of the previous dances. “People should expect a stress-relieving night,...good food [and] good company in a very lovely place”.
This “Night to Remember” won’t be a bunch of fairy lights in the gym or senior commons. Prepare to dance the night away in the beautiful Anandi Hotel, situated in the midst of the bustling city with breathtaking views. Located in Hongqiao, not only is it closer to school and more convenient, but the senior student council has also provided direct bus transport from school to the hotel.
Not to mention, Stanley commented that Winter Formal is an “outlet for students to forget about the [stress and pressure from tests and exams] and to be in the moment, be happy and to have fun”, especially because “SAS students sometimes forget to have fun and to enjoy their lives for just a few seconds”.
What makes this year’s Winter Formal so special is the unique approach the student council has decided taken to price the tickets. The price is set at the usual 300 RMB, however, the student council has utilized the “fun WeChat die-rolling game” as a way for students to purchase the ticket at a discount based on the number that they roll.

Winter Formal should definitely be on your bucket list to attend during your 4-year experience in SAS. To all the underclassman: never fear. Everyone is welcome to this event! Winter Formal is a night to create unforgettable memories with people you cherish and hold close to your heart. This is also a special opportunity for you to dress up in your fanciest clothes and see everyone looking sharp.
If you’re not particularly a slayer on the dance floor, you’ll be happy to gently sway to the performances from our local talent— one performer being senior Ryan Yin, who you’ve probably seen in musicals and APAC choir; you might even get to listen to a live performance of your favorite songs.
Grab your squad, significant other, or friends and join us on Saturday, February 16th, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Anandi Hotel for a night that one will never forget.
The senior student council is also offering free tickets to the students with the best winter formal proposals, so if you have any ideas, send in your video at stuco2019@saschina.org!
