Before our carriage turns back into the pumpkin, our horses turn back to mice, and our expensive outfits turn back to rags, we can all enjoy a couple of hours escaping reality at the annual Winter Formal. As the first official student body event of 2018 and the first dance of a school year, Winter Formal has garnered up a lot of excitement from all parts of the school. This year, the senior student council has decorated and prepared the venue following the theme of “Once Upon A Night” in order to create a magical evening for the student body.
Winter Formal will be hosted at 500 Dongdaming Lu, near Lushun Lu, Hongkou district through 500 gate, or in Chinese: 虹口区东大名路500号. The features at Sun Chateau are “indistinguishable to a royal ball, with massive French windows, crystal chandeliers, finished with a view of the HuangPu River shimmering under the skyscrapers’ lights and passing ferries,” said senior STUCO president Bernice Zhao. Set on January 27th, the dance will start from 8 PM and last until 11:30 PM.
According to the senior STUCO, Winter Formal features a “real-life Cinderella carriage, nutcrackers, Beauty and the Beast enchanted roses, and glass slippers,” according to Zhao. From throwback songs to live performances, there will be a ton of music to dance to! Food provided will include “finger foods such as mini sandwiches, chocolate cake.”
Usually, the title of “King” and “Queen” is only reserved for upperclassmen at the prom. However this year, the formal is planned out so that all high school students can vote for a “King and Queen” for juniors and seniors, and a “Prince and Princess” for underclassmen. All students can vote here, so cast in your votes!
All in all, Winter Formal will be the first high school dance for some and one of the last dances for some other students. Tickets to the dance are 300 RMB and they are sold at the 11/12 lounge during break and outside the 9/10 commons during lunch and usually through free periods. You can win a free ticket to Winter Formal by sending in your proposals to senior STUCO. From the magical venue and the amazing food, it looks like Winter Formal will be a memorable night!
