KoozĂ„, a production from Cirque du Soleil, is currently in town! Although there are many traditional acts such as aerial hoops and contortionists, there are also numerous acts unique to KoozĂ„ that will even leave Cirque du Soleil fans’ hearts racing.
The high wire is always an act where audience members will be holding their breath, waiting for that one moment where one person accidentally slips up. However, at KoozĂ„, the stakes are MUCH higher. Not only are they balancing on a tight rope, there are, in fact two tight ropes, one above the other. For the grand finale of this act, the acrobats even cycle across the rope, and, as if that wasn’t good enough to stay in audience’s minds for a long time, two cyclists end up balancing a pole on their shoulders on which they place a chair on which another person stands (all while on the tight rope, of course). Sound too confusing and wonky to be true? Well, here you have it:
The wheel of death is (as the name suggests) no small feat! It wouldn’t be a show if there isn’t at least one audience member screaming out in terror. The acrobats are running like hamsters in the spinning wheel as it goes faster and faster until one acrobat starts running on the outside of the wheels, soon followed by the other acrobat. Think that’s already too much for you to handle? It gets better, because pretty soon, the acrobats will be jump roping on the wheels of death, even going so far as to spin the ropes around themselves more than once per jump - most people can’t even do that on the ground!
The final act of the show is the teeterboard, one of the classics of Cirque du Soleil. Here, people are launched off of a seesaw to neck-breaking height, spinning and somersaulting in the air. The landings, however, are what is most incredible. Expertly calculated, the acrobats are able to land in a split on the shoulders of two other acrobats, and even stand on the shoulders of an acrobat, already held up in the air by others. Moreover, people are being launched on stilts from incredulous heights, and even on a single stilt, landing on a small square mattress, without toppling over or losing balance the slightest bit.
KoozĂ„ is still in Shanghai until December 3rd, so get your tickets before they leave. With comedy, and a show, there is something for everybody to enjoy! The breathtaking acts need to be seen in real life to even fathom the immense talent that the acrobats have. Tickets range from 280 RMB to 1980 RMB on Damai, though it is recommended to sit as close to the stage as possible to enjoy the show in all its glory. Just beware, sitting in the first row has the risks of popcorn being strewn over you, getting “peed on” by a “dog, ” and being asked to go on stage.
