Season One Sports Recaps (Part One)

All recaps are provided by Athletic Council.

Rugby
Blood was spilled, literally and figuratively, on the pitch Saturday, September 9. A shard of glass from his own goggles pierced Tae Joon Jeong, forward pack leader for SAS Puxi, while making a tackle for the team. After laying down on the grass, Jeong was walked off the pitch. The Pudong team were on one knee as a sign of respect, clapping along with the rest of the SAS community, as a key player of the SAS Puxi team limped off the pitch not with fear for the game or anger towards the opponent team, but pride for the school he played for.

Spectators of the game called Jeong a "true eagle at heart" and described the scene as the "epitome of sportsmanship and courage". In many’s eyes, these themes were a common motif throughout the rest of the day.

Both the SAS Puxi Varsity Boys and Girls teams faced off SAS Pudong this weekend, resulting in one victory and one tie. The Athletic Council said the performances seen on pitch were a plethora of hard-work, of dedication, of valor from both teams.

"I thought the team played well," said Jeong regarding the Varsity Boy's game, "but I'm not satisfied." He said that the team "had the potential to win, but did not step up enough" as the game progressed.

His fellow teammate Jae Jin Shin, having been out of the rugby spotlight for two years, agreed. "Many players have improved drastically during the 2 years that I was gone for," he said, "but it was great being able to play alongside these talented individuals this Saturday." He explained further that  "everyone made mistakes last Saturday," but hopes that Puxi can "redeem itself at the next game."

The Puxi Boys rugby team tied to Pudong 12-12. The team hopes that they will achieve better results when playing with Pudong on Friday, September 8th at Pudong.

Many thought that the Girls Varsity team’s 22-12 victory shed some light in its future games. "I think the game was a really good start to the season," said Ashley Tang, a winger for the Girl's Varsity team.

Despite having won, she said that "it wasn't perfect, but it showed us the things that we need to work on." She hoped that the team could improve on communicating with each other and anticipating the next play, and knowing how to react instead of just "waiting for things to happen."

The team strives to gain more experience through upcoming games in order to prepare for tournaments such as WABx, China Cup, and eventually APAC.

Volleyball

SAS Puxi's Varsity Volleyball teams faced off against SAS Pudong, Concordia International School of Shanghai, and the British International School Shanghai at Shanghai Cup on September 1. Our SAS Puxi teams won five out of six games. A very strong start to the season, the Athletic Council wishes both teams continue with their strong start and improve drastically throughout the season.

We were able to interview one players from each team, Charles Lee and Sarina Ku, about their thoughts on this weekend and the team's performance.

"We played very well this weekend," Lee said regarding the Shanghai Cup games, "we all played as a team." Despite the overwhelming success this weekend, he thought there were always improvements that could be made. "Firstly, we could be cheering louder on the bench," he said, "but technique-wise, we could definitely be getting to the ball earlier, have better hits, and be on a lower stance."

The team eventually won all three games at Shanghai Cup.

Two of the Varsity Girl’s team’s wins, against CISS and BISS respectively, were decisive 3-0 victories. "I think we did amazing this weekend!" Ku said, "although we had our first loss of the season against Pudong, we definitely learned a lot from playing against them, and became much closer as a team." She thought that one of their main focuses was to "improve our communication when we play, and to always be the loudest team on the court."

Tennis

SAS Puxi’s tennis team played in a friendly against their sister school SAS Pudong’s team September 2. The team accumulated a record of 34 wins, three losses and three ties. According to the Athletic Council, every player played to the best of their ability and displayed both spirit and sportsmanship in the process. They also believe that the tennis teams’ weekend accomplishments marked an auspicious start to the year, and they they "hope their achievements can persist."

Nick Tan, member of the boy’s varsity tennis team, described his match to be "fierce" and "against an equally competent opponent."

“I felt a bit nervous, so I played very defensively”, Tan said, “but thanks to my teammates, who were really supportive of me during my match, I managed to focus on getting the ball back consistently”.

Tan eventually went on and won the match. Everyone on the team “showed lots of team spirit and were supporting and cheering each other on”, illustrating the warmth and camaraderie between the players, he said.

The girl’s tennis team exhibited similar themes. “We cheered each other on during the match and motivated each other to do better”, said girl’s varsity tennis team member Tania Tan. As a freshman who recently made the cut for the varsity squad, she thought “it was really cool to join the team after watching from the sidelines for so long”.

The girl’s team won all but one of their matches, something the Athletic Council attributes to their strong sense of support.

Cross-Country

August 29, SAS Puxi competed in the SISAC cross-country practice meet against Concordia, SAS Pudong, and SSIS Suzhou. From the boy’s team, senior Hanson Xia and Raj Rana earned first and second places respectively. From the girl’s team, junior Renee Pearce, junior Evian Chai, and freshman Jennifer Houmard placed in all three podium categories in that order.

In light of his recent victory, Xia said that "obviously, finishing first is always nice, but it’s still the beginning of the season.” says in light of his recent victory, “and as the season goes on hopefully I can run better times and find better success”.

"Focus on running smart," Xia said, regarding what mentality successful cross-country runners adopt. "That often beats running hard. Sometimes overanalyzing things will just backfire."

According to the Athletic Council, the prospects for the cross-country team this season are positive as shown by the performances of both new and returning runners in the most recent meet.

Baseball

The SAS Puxi Varsity Baseball team played 3 games the week of September 4-10, winning 1 game against Pudong while losing 2 games against Pudong and Concordia respectively. With the Canadian Academy Invitational on the 14th of September, the baseball team hopes to get as much experience as they can before the next game.

"We played terribly this weekend," said Arthur Liang, a junior on the baseball team. "We played three games, and we lost two, one of them having been our home opener." he said, "Especially in regards to the home opener, I feel very disappointed that we lost on our home pitch."

Right after the home opener against Pudong, the varsity team played Pudong again, this time winning. "Aidan played very well that game," said Liang, "but as a whole, considering all three games, it was not very good."

When asked about a few improvements that could be made, Liang expressed that "the whole team needs to play better defense", considering there were "lots of errors" throughout the three games. "We barely made any hits during our home opener," he said, "and I think that’s our takeaway: we have to improve on our hitting."
