Smashing! Rolling! Jumping! You don’t often have the opportunity to play over sixty games varying from bouncy castles to a game of Minute to Win it. The International Fair well lived up to its hype, spreading joy to the entire SAS family. Hosted by the PTSA on October 15, the International Fair embodied all the ingredients for an aura of excitement: interactive activities and fantastic food.
From the opening of the International Fair, cascades of parents and students flowed onto the campus. Jumping and shouting, the kids were all ready to embark on a long exploration of wonders, a journey that would take them through all the aspects of hard work the teachers and students put into the fair, an expedition that may last in their memories for a long time to come.
One notable aspect of the International Fair was the electrifying performances by SAS students, literally setting the tone for the fair. Playing and singing a range of beautiful tunes from “Happy” by Pharell Williams to “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, the high school jazz band, concert band, and choir, directed by Ms. Karolina Pek, made their mark on the fair. The crowd cheered and sang along with energy – a fitting manner on a bright sunny occasion. One of the clarinet players, Freshman Kevin Kim, expressed pride over the band’s performance, accounting that “the many tiresome rehearsals really paid off!” Band director Ms. Pek also left the stage with delight, claiming that despite “moments of chaos, the band stayed together and did the job.”
As you walked past the stage onto the next phrase of the journey, dozens of tents loomed on the horizon: game tents. They were student-led activities to fundraise for their respective clubs, a fundamental aspect of the fair. At one station, you could play a round of tombola and potentially receive a prize of a virtual reality headset, a 1.8-meter teddy bear or, with no luck, a piece of White Rabbit candy. With many other games such as golf, frisbee toss, darts, and more, as Jeff Jung described, “It couldn’t have been any better.”
Despite the disappointment of the fair closing earlier than usual, the International Fair was definitely a hugely successful event for the SAS community. Elementary school student Kingston Ye epitomized the event, saying, “I wish it could happen every day!”
