You might have heard of Leigh Bardugo’s delightfully wicked new book, Six of Crows, if you’ve been keeping up with the young adult literature world. It’s set in a fantasy world and focuses on six people with completely different backgrounds (a convict, a sharpshooter, a runaway, a spy, a Heartrender, and a thief) who come together to attempt a high-stake heist. Six of Crows is a blend of fantasy, adventure, mystery, and crime, and here are five reasons every high school should pick it up:
1. There’s something for everyone. Whether the reader is looking for action, humor, suspense, magic, or even romance, this book has it. Also, the plot progresses at a fast pace. There are either plot twists and action or flashbacks for character development. Think Sherlock-y deduction with plenty of fighting and violence mixed in. You’ll find no filler chapters in Six of Crows!
2. Kaz Brekker. Enough said. Actually, all the characters in this book will grow on you like annoying weeds eventually. Who doesn’t love an awesomely kickbutt criminal gang?
3. The characterization and world building are excellent and believable. I could picture living in Ketterdam or among the Dregs. Which is saying a lot, considering the book is about criminals with magical powers. Each of the characters has an interesting past that is explored more deeply throughout their point of view (Did I mention that the book is told from five characters’ individual points of view? You’d think that gets confusing but it’s actually clear who is who based on the flashbacks in the chapters)
4. The unique perspective/people the story focuses on. The protagonists aren’t your typical can-do-no-wrong angels—it’s interesting to look out from a “criminal’s” perspective, yet to find yourself seeing them as the heroes.
5. And finally… the hardcover edition is beautiful! I think most people still judge books by their covers to some extent, including me, and this book not only has an amazing plot and characters but also a stunning exterior. I mean I could admire the solid black pages for ages.
So the next time you’re looking for an independent book to read, you know to check out the Book of the Month. Even if you’re one of those people who think they don’t like reading, this might be the book to change your mind. At least, do it for the black pages.
