On April 9, the SAS Puxi upperclassmen attended the yearly prom. This year’s event was hosted at the House of Roosevelt Wine Cellar Restaurant, located on the Bund in a neo-classical building built in the 1920s. The restaurant is designed to resemble an “Old World wine cellar,” and the prom committee did a splendid job of turning it into a fun yet classy setting using dim lighting and chill music.
This year’s theme was ‘Lost in Heaven,’ inspired by the rustic venue. Settling on this theme was no easy feat. “The prom committee spent a long time visiting lots of different places before finding the right venue for the right price,” says prom committee president Shannon Su. “Not many students realize the amount of work it all takes.” Their efforts were altogether very rewarding. Two photo booths were set up for students to take digital photos at any time during the night, and PromComm members mingled about, taking candid photographs. An added bonus was the Polaroid cameras taking instant photographs for students to keep. The bar was consistently stocked with a large selection of drinks from fruit juice to soda. Small bites were available, including mozzarella and tomatoes, fish balls, pudding, and profiteroles. The aesthetic resembled that of a fancy cocktail party, making the evening quite enjoyable and worthwhile.
About halfway through the night, a few students surprised the rest with a flash mob to the song “Teach Me How to Dougie.” This brought comic relief to the otherwise grandiose evening and was a great way of encouraging students to dance.
Later on, seniors Andrew Kao and Grace Mui were crowned this year’s prom king and queen. This was followed by a group photo of the Class of 2016, concluding their final high school prom.
