Safety of students is a large concern for universities around the world. Since being in university means almost no supervision and almost complete independence, keeping safe can sometimes be a challenge, especially during late hours of the night. Five students at the University of Michigan decided to take this universal concern into account and make a simple, yet highly effective app.
Companion is an app that allows users to pick friend to accompany and track them on their journey home. The person they pick does not necessarily have to have the app installed, making the situation even more convenient. After the user sets their destination, they get a message asking if they’re okay each time they go off route or create a sudden movement (jerking, yanks, etc). If they are fine, they press a button within fifteen seconds. If not, the app transforms into a alarm and projects loud noises, along with the option to call 911. In addition, the companion (family or friend) tracking the user’s journey is also alerted and given the option to call the police. This can guarantee the utmost level of safety for a student, or any one else for that matter, who is traveling alone.
Currently, the app has a 3-star rating on the Apple Store, along with an equal distribution of positive and negative comments. Although a majority of the users enjoy the concept of the app, the critical reviews point out some glitches that need to be fixed. These problems are bound to be present in an app that is so new, and will no doubt be repaired in no time.
Currently, the app only works in the United States and a few European countries. However, as its popularity grows and continues to expand, it’s likely that we will see it becoming more international, and hopefully even be available in China!
